  • Q: How long is too long or too soon after a loss to join a circle?

A: What I usually say when this comes up is “time seldom determines how our grief will behave.” You know what you need. The group is designed to meet each person where they are. 10 years? 2 months? Often the relationship to you and details surrounding a death can shift how a person feels about the loss. We will explore this and more in circle.

Q: What should I expect? I’m nervous and curious.

A: Expect each session to generally have some combination of the following:

    • a grounding practice to transition into the room (virtual or in-person)

    • review of agreements to guide how the group works together

    • a review of the agenda

    • a prompt, poem, and/or quotation; or something from optional homework or related to the group’s purpose (child loss, for example)

    • learning about different theories of grief to better understand our own experiences and needs

    • introduction to rituals and daily practices

    • small group and large group discussion

    • All activities have many entry points. There are sentence starters and options for each part. As in life, there is always the option to pass or approach in a way that feels important for you. Being authentic to what you need as you grieve helps give everyone that permission. There lies so much of the power of pursuing healing in community.

There is a balance of structure, spaciousness, connection, and reflection. You will have the opportunity to give feedback at the end of each session (not only at the end of the series) to help guide the facilitator’s responsiveness to evolving needs in real time.
